GatherNearby vs Partiful

A delightful free invite app — for the guest list you already have.

Partiful is a free, playful way to invite your friends over text, and it's genuinely lovely for a house party. But it's invite-first: your guests come from your own contacts, so there's no local audience to discover you, and it's built for one-off parties more than recurring community. It's also venture-backed, and now monetizing — it added its own paid-ticketing fee — and venture money has to be paid back many times over, so the fees tend to run one way from here. GatherNearby is independent and bootstrapped: we help neighbors who don't know you yet find your gatherings, turn a one-off party into a recurring community, and charge a flat 5% that answers to you — not to investors who need a return.

What Partiful is great at

Free, playful invites to your own guest list, sent over text. Delightful for a house party.

The GatherNearby difference

Partiful is invite-first— your guests come from you, so there's no local audience to discover you, and it's built for one-off parties rather than the weekly rhythm of a community. GatherNearby helps neighbors who don't know you yet find you, and turns a one-off party into a recurring community.

Frequently asked

Does Partiful help people discover my event?

Not really — Partiful is built around inviting your own contacts. GatherNearby has a local discovery feed, city pages, and search so neighbors who don't already know you can find and book your gatherings.

Can I charge for tickets on Partiful?

Yes — Partiful now has its own paid ticketing, processed through Stripe with payouts to your bank (it replaced the older Venmo/Cash App/PayPal “Chip In” workaround). GatherNearby works the same way under the hood — built-in Stripe checkout at a flat 5% — and pairs it with local discovery, so new people can find and book your events, not just the guests you already have.

Is GatherNearby free like Partiful?

It's free to attend and free to host free events. You only pay a flat 5% (plus card processing) when you sell a paid ticket.

Is Partiful really free forever?

It started that way — the founders even joked in 2023 that “Partiful will not make money.” It already is: Partiful launched paid ticketing with a fee and now says it's “monetizing.” That's not a one-off — it's the math of venture capital. Partiful took more than $27M from investors like a16z and GV, and that money has to be returned many times over, on a clock. A free app alone won't return that, and the pressure only points one way. GatherNearby took no venture money — independent and bootstrapped, our flat 5% answers to you, not to investors who need a return.
